BLOOD PRESSURE
Blood Pressure

Take your Blood Pressue in a seated position with both feet on the ground after resting/relaxing for at least 5 minutes with arm resting on a surface at level of their heart.

What is the creatinine and GFR?

Creatinine

  • A protein measured in blood used to help estimate kidney function

Cystatin C

  • A protein measured in blood used to help estimate kidney function

GFR or Glomerular Filtration Rate

  • Estimated most commonly from the blood creatinine level or Cystatin C

  • It tells us how well your kidneys are filtering your blood

  • It also tells us if you might have Chronic KIdney Disease.  See below

Creatinine
What do the different stages of chronic kidney disease mean?
Stages of CKD
What is does protein or albumin in the urine mean?
Urine Protein

Stage 1 Chronic Kidney Disease requires on more than one occasion

  • Presence of an estimated GFR (eGFR) greater than 90 ml/min

  • AND/OR more than 30 mg/dl of Albumin in the urine

  • AND/OR more than 300 mg/dl or Protein in the urine

  • AND/OR a structural abnormality of your kidney, such as a small kidney.

Stage 2 Chronic Kidney DIsease

requires on more than one occasion

  • Presence of an estimated GFR (eGFR) greater than 60-90 ml/min

  • AND/OR more than 30 mg/dl of Albumin in the urine

  • AND/OR more than 300 mg/dl or Protein in the urine

  • AND/OR a structural abnormality of your kidney, such as a small kidney.

Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease

requires on more than one occasion

  • Presence of an estimated GFR (eGFR) greater than 30-60 ml/min

  • AND/OR more than 30 mg/dl of Albumin in the urine

  • AND/OR more than 300 mg/dl or Protein in the urine

  • AND/OR a structural abnormality of your kidney, such as a small kidney.

Stage 4 CKD

requires on more than one occasion

  • Presence of an estimated eGFR of 15-30 ml/min

  • You should be seeing a nephrologist

Stage 5 CKD

requires on more than one occasion

  • Presence of an estimated eGFR of less than 15-30 ml/min

  • You should be seeing a nephrologist

Proteinuria

  • Excess protein in the urine.

  • Normally, there is less than 300 mg/day.

  • May suggest underlying kidney disease.

  • Temporary increases in urine protein can be caused by other conditions, such as infections, vigorous exercise, and medications.

  • An abnormal urine protein should be repeated within 1-3 months to verify its' persistence.

Albuminuria

  • A type of protein not usually found in urine.

  • Persistent abnormal quantaties of ablumin in urine can be seen in kidney disease caused by diabetes and high blood pressure.

  • Like proteinuria, sometimes other conditions can cause temporary elevations.

  • An abnormal urine albumin level should be repeated within 1-3 months to verify its' persistence.

  • If your urine albumin is 30-300 mg your doctor may consider sending you to a kidney specialist.

  • If it is more 300 mg you should see a kidney specialist.
